This Floral Friday is a little different. Instead of featuring a florist or type of flower, I wanted to share how to use florals (and loads of greenery!) in Christmas decor without it looking like a mall display. Neidpath Castle in the Scottish Borders is a perfect example of how to make your home look festive without filling it with poinsettias. And, of course, we have to have a peek into all the castle rooms! Now occupied by Lulu Benson and her family, the Scottish castle is currently in use as a venue and vacation rental. Lulu has an artistic background as a framer and boutique retail owner, and uses that creative energy in her home. Pictured above is Lulu and her daughter on their way to collect winter greenery from the arboretum. I would like to have an arboretum filled with foliage for picking. Her two little spaniels are called Truffle and Twiglet. Read on to see how she uses her foraged goods to create a magical Christmas scene. I love the above arrangement because there is nothing inherently "Christmas-y" about it. A classic green and white palette would work any time of year, but because of the more traditional greenery elements around the home (think pine and fir, oranges, and amaryllis) it accentuates the overall designs. Above, Lulu and her design partner, Peter Laird, get the dining hall ready for a festive dinner. Once again, there is nothing overtly Christmas-y about it, but it still feels totally seasonally appropriate. They do this by using a very natural palette, focusing mostly on in season greenery. I bet it smells heavenly with all that pine about. Oranges are such a lovely touch for holiday decor. I wish they were more commonly used in the US, they add such a great pop of color. Orange and the deep red of winterberries is such a cheerful color combination, it reminds my of a crackling fire, so it especially clever to use those stems above an actual fire. If you have an interest in making your own orange pomanders, the Old Farmer's Almanac has a simple tutorial. I think they would look beautiful in an antique ceramic bowl on a bed of ivy. And our final peek, the perfectly cozy bedrooms. You can stay in many of the rooms in the castle if you decide to have your own Scottish getaway. Queen Mary of Scots was even once a guest!
